Why You Need to Attend a Mat-Su Miners Baseball Game

1. Rich History

In 1976, the Valley Green Giants baseball team was born in Palmer, Alaska. The name was changed to the Mat-Su Miners in 1980 and was chosen by the people of Palmer to recognize the importance of mining in the Matanuska-Susitna Valley.

Today, the Miners are one of five teams that make up the Alaska Baseball League, one of the top summer collegiate leagues in the country. The league includes the Peninsula Oilers, the Chugiak-Eagle River Chinooks, and two teams from Anchorage: the Bucs and the Glacier Pilots. Many of today’s baseball stars have played in the ABL, and close to 400 former Miners have played professional baseball – including 72 who have gone on to the Major Leagues!

2. State of the Art Ballpark

Hermon Brothers Field is one of the most picturesque amateur baseball fields in America. It was built in 1976 and is located within the Alaska State Fairgrounds in Palmer. With the magnificent Pioneer Peak Mountain as it’s backdrop, players and fans have a breathtaking view that cannot be duplicated anywhere else. The stadium also features a merchandise shack, box seats, a concession stand, and restrooms.

3. Family-Friendly Atmosphere

Attending a Miners game is a fun and inexpensive way to enjoy a summer night in Alaska. After all, what’s better than eating hot dogs and peanuts at a ball game? Tickets are just $4 for adults and $2 for children, and games take place from June to the beginning of August. Click here to view the summer schedule.
