4 Major Providers and Cell Phone Service in Alaska

1. AT&T

In larger cities and towns, AT&T coverage in Alaska is excellent. Some even provide 4G! This service provider operates entirely on a network of towers, so make sure the places you are visiting have nearby AT&T towers. You’ll be happy to know that our town, (Palmer, Alaska,) receives great AT&T service.

2. Verizon

Since December 2014, Verizon cell phone coverage in Alaska has grown exponentially. Today, the service has nearly 200 towers and their own 4G towers. Highly populated cities and areas enjoy great Verizon coverage, including Palmer! Even when you travel beyond this region, you’ll instantly start roaming on ACS and GCI 3G towers. This means that visitors still have good service even on the long stretches between towns.

3. Sprint

Sprint cell phone coverage in Alaska is a bit different than AT&T and Verizon. Instead of using their own towers, Sprint roams on GCI and ACS service. If Sprint is your provider, you’ll be able to use your cell phone in areas covered by these two local providers. Luckily, both these services boast great coverage in our area.

4. T-Mobile

T-Mobile, like Sprint, does not have their own network of cell phone service in Alaska. Instead, they roam on AT&T and GCI networks.

Things to Keep in Mind During Your Travels

While we’ve established that there is great cell phone service in Alaska, there are a few things to consider as you travel between towns or into more unpopulated areas. Here are a few tips that will help you plan your communication with others more thoroughly.

  • Alaska is a huge state! In fact, it’s twice the size of Texas. Covering every square mile of the state isn’t possible just yet, but it could be a possibility in the future.
  • It’s not uncommon to lose service during your trips between towns. To be safe, don’t plan for any important calls during these times.
  • Some towns will have better service than others. For example, Anchorage enjoys better coverage than less populated areas. When you expect that your cell phone won’t work everywhere, it can save you from disappointment and inconveniences.
