History of Williams Reindeer Farm in Palmer, Alaska

Alaska native Tom Williams dreamed of owning a moose farm. He and his father were avid moose hunters and had a great appreciation for these majestic creatures. When Tom found out that it’s impossible to own a moose farm in Alaska, he considered a different, domestic animal – the reindeer.

In 1987, Tom went to Northern Canada to purchase a herd of reindeer. They were brought back to the farm in Alaska and were taught how to eat grains and local hay. The first herd consisted of just 20 reindeer has since grown to around 150. Today, Williams Reindeer Farm is an award-winning facility that attracts visitors of all ages.

Reindeer Tours

The best way to explore the farm is to take a reindeer tour! Each tour includes information about the reindeer and what makes them special. Visitors can grab a cup of feed and enter the pen to hand-feed and photograph their new friends. You’ll meet Dolly the bison and Rocky the moose as well as various elk, horses, bunnies, and chickens! A trip to the farm can be as short or as long as you’d like, so feel free to pack a lunch and spend a few hours with the animals.

Local Tip: This is a working farm. Umbrellas and mud boots are provided, but be sure to dress for the weather!
