3 of the Best Stops on the Glacier Discovery Train

There are so many great ways to discover the beauty of Alaska: from a plane, from a car, or even on foot. But if you want to experience the 49th state from a different point of view, we recommend taking the train. Each morning in the summer, the Glacier Discovery Train departs Anchorage and takes visitors on an unforgettable journey to Grandview, Alaska. Here are some of the places you’ll stop along the way.

The Glacier Discovery Train is just one of many activities available in the summertime!

Spend a Day on the Glacier Discovery Train

1. Portage

One of the first stops on the Glacier Discovery Train is the town of Portage. This former settlement is located near the head of Turnagain Arm and was destroyed by an earthquake in 1964. Not much of the town remains, but guests are welcome to disembark the train and visit the Alaska Wildlife Conservation Center. You’ll learn about wildlife like brown bears, moose, caribou, wood bison, and more.

2. Whittier

After dropping off passengers in Portage, the train travels through the longest tunnel in North America to the town of Whittier. (Have your camera ready; mountains and glaciers surround the train on the way in!) Whittier is known as the “Gateway to Prince William Sound”, and with some of the best coastal scenery in Alaska, it’s the perfect place to take a glacier cruise. Feel free to contact one of the companies below for tour dates and details.

3. Spencer Glacier

The next stop is the Spencer Glacier Whistle Stop in Chugach National Forest. This backcountry paradise is famous for its beauty and is accessible via a 1.3-mile gravel path. A Forest Ranger will lead you on an easy trek to the glacier, where rafting, hiking, and ice climbing await.

Local Tip: If you don’t want to get off at Spencer Glacier, staying in the railcar is a great option. The train winds along Placer River Valley and offers breathtaking views of Bartlett Glacier and Trail Glacier. In fact, many consider this the most scenic stretch of track.
