What to Know Before You Visit Denali in Winter:
Preparation is key to enjoying Denali National Park during the colder months, so here are a few things you should keep in mind before your trip:
- Vehicle access is limited on Denali Park Road
- Make sure you bring appropriate clothing for the frigid weather
- Call the park at 907-683-2294 to learn about current conditions
- Bring plenty of water to avoid dehydration, even during cold weather
As long as you come prepared, you’ll have a truly memorable experience at Denali!
Start at the Winter Visitor Center
During the winter months, the Murie Science and Learning Center acts as the park’s visitor center. You can find it at mile 1.4 on Denali Park Road, and we highly recommend stopping here before beginning your adventure. You can talk with rangers, pick up maps, and pay the entrance fee for the park. There is an indoor picnic area nearby, but it doesn’t serve food, so make sure you remember to bring healthy snacks to fuel up prior to heading onto the trails.
Explore the Trails
From here, you have a variety of trails available to you. You can pick up free snowshoe rentals at the visitor center and travel on foot, bring skis and glide along the snow, and there are even dog mushing tours available. However you choose to explore, you’re in for a once-in-a-lifetime experience!
View the Northern Lights
Wintertime is the best time to catch a glimpse of the Northern Lights, and Denali is perfect for it. As you venture through the trails, make sure you glance up at the sky, especially during darker hours. The peaceful environment and beautiful landscape at the park make for a magical backdrop to enjoy this enchanting display.
